Looking for a winch in Kuwait? Most people searching for one actually need a hoist — and the difference decides which machine is safe for the job. This guide explains winches, electric hoists and chain blocks, what the confusing “250/500 kg” capacity numbers mean, and which one suits a workshop, garage or building site in Kuwait.
Winch or hoist — which one do you need?
The two words get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not:
- A winch pulls — it drags a load along the ground or up a slope, horizontally. Think of pulling a vehicle or dragging equipment across a yard.
- A hoist lifts — it raises a load vertically, straight off the ground.
This matters for safety. A pulling winch is not built to hold a suspended load above people, because it usually lacks the load-holding brake a lifting hoist has. If the load will hang in the air, you need a hoist.
In Kuwait, most workshop and garage buyers asking for a “winch” want an electric winch hoist — a lifting machine with a motor, steel cable and automatic brake.
What the “250/500 kg” numbers actually mean
This is the single most misunderstood spec, and buying the wrong one wastes money.
Electric hoists are rated with two figures, for example 250/500 kg or 750/1500 kg:
- The lower number is single-line lifting — the cable runs straight down to the hook. Faster, and you get the full cable length of travel.
- The higher number is double-line lifting — the cable passes through a pulley block, doubling the capacity. The trade-off is that lifting is half the speed and you get half the height.
So a 750/1500 kg hoist lifts 750 kg the fast way, or 1500 kg the slow way using the supplied pulley. Buy based on the heaviest load you will ever lift, not the average one.
Single phase or three phase? Check your power first
This decision is made for you by the building, not by preference.
- Single phase (220V) — works from a normal socket. Right for home garages, small workshops and most rented industrial units. Smaller capacities.
- Three phase (380V) — needs a proper industrial supply. Required once you get into the heaviest capacities.
Check the supply at the location before ordering. A three phase hoist delivered to a single phase workshop cannot be plugged in, and no adapter fixes that properly.
Cable length — how high do you need to lift?
Cable length sets your maximum lift height. A 20-metre cable is plenty for a standard workshop ceiling; a 30-metre cable suits taller industrial bays and construction work. Remember the double-line rule above: lifting on the pulley halves your usable height.
Electric hoist or manual chain block?
A بلوك سلسلة is a manual hoist — you pull a hand chain and gearing does the work. It is worth choosing one when:
- There is no power where you are working — outdoors, remote sites, or during an outage.
- You lift occasionally and do not want to spend on a motor.
- You need to position a load precisely — manual control is very fine.
- You need it to be portable — a chain block goes in a toolbox.
Go electric instead if you lift repeatedly through the day. Pulling a chain by hand twenty times a shift stops being practical very quickly.
The trolley option — worth it or not?
A hoist fixed to one point only lifts up and down in that spot. Add a trolley and the hoist rolls along an I-beam, so you can lift a load and move it sideways — from a delivery pallet across to a bench, for example.
If you are lifting engines out of vehicles, moving stock between bays, or feeding a production line, the trolley usually pays for itself. Wireless-controlled trolley versions let you drive it from a safe distance.

3) Chain Block — Manual Hoist
No power needed. Alloy steel chain, smooth gearing, and a hook with a safety latch so the load cannot jump off. Models from 1 ton to 5 ton, compact enough to carry to the job. From 23 KD.
Safety points worth insisting on
- Automatic brake — the load must stop and hold the instant you release the control. Never lift with a machine that drifts.
- Hook safety latch — the spring catch that stops a sling slipping off the hook. Non-negotiable.
- Limit switch — stops the hook before it runs into the drum at the top.
- Never exceed the rated capacity, and never use the single-line rating with a double-line load.
- Never stand or work under a suspended load, however short the lift.
- Check the cable before each use — kinks, broken strands or flattening mean it is time to replace, not to risk one more lift.

What is the difference between a winch and a hoist?
A winch pulls a load horizontally; a hoist lifts it vertically. If the load will hang in the air, use a hoist — it has the load-holding brake a pulling winch does not.
Why does my hoist show two capacities?
The lower figure is single-line lifting (straight cable, full speed and height). The higher figure is double-line lifting through the pulley block — double the weight, at half the speed and half the height.
